the sun of the young shines as the old
retire to the cool shade crowds of birds
lounge in the trees drinking and singing
old melodies when the world was new
and naked gods strolled through the orchard
we wait with our stories our old songs
our broken wishes the day charges
forward the daylight is a river
to the horizon to a molten
destiny to a life too full to
regret but yet there are still moments
that claw at our ankles and drag us
back into the depth a bleak midnight

blending with time and easy rhymes
the face of the earth covered with
static sitting in the web of
furniture music and the drone
of eternal TV and eyes
downcast buried in screens working
thumbs spasmodically but here’s
a pencil and I carve out the
hours on paper

put the nation in a brown paper bag
and drink straight from the bottle we stumble
against the curb cursing the concrete and
lamenting the hot humid August air
slippery serpentine and smothering
horrified by alien TV heads
we watch the slideshow stream of news banners
below we will all die in our slop and
guilt while the waters rise and torches burn
I knew an old man from Poland who made
shoes in Miami I see him wagging
his finger – I told you I told you so
